Fly Shop of the Bighorns Tasty Bug Streamer Contest
« on: December 19, 2016, 01:30:24 PM »
Peter Widener at Fly Shop of the Bighorns in Sheridan, WY hosted a fly tying contest for streamer patterns.

There were around 35 entries from all over the country, including several professional tyers.

The top prize is a Clutch rod of choice, a Hatch reel of choice, and a SA line of choice.  In addtion, there is a year long contract with MFC to produce the winning pattern for the 2018 catalog.  Finally, there will be a step-by-step video made and posted online.

Well, I won it all with a non-articulated, single hook, weedless baitfish pattern.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, the Fur Burger.

I caught a bunch of fish this fall on the Caney with midges that looked nothing like that.

I prefer non articulated patterns now. Flies that take an hour to tie and $20 worth of material, still only take 5 seconds to break off. I'm not convinced that it's entirely necessary. Case in point, I hooked a very worthy musky last Sat on a Smallmouth streamer that was about 2" long..... I lost the fish at the net, but what a thrill it was! Yoda has it all on video somewhere.

I was casting from the steps near the dam. Kept breaking my big flies off on the back cast on that damn Trout Unlimited sign.

Thanks, Grumpy!  I appreciate the kind words.  There are many, many tyers out there that are far more talented than I am.  I tie because I like to, but it helps when customers like my flies, too.

Thanks, Steve.  To be honest, I'm swamped with orders and I'm doing my best to keep my head above water.  This weekend alone, I've had over $1500 in orders as a result of the contest.  I'm not complaining, but it'll be a long time before I fish again.....

Nice tie Sam.

Nice door prize, which Clutch did you pick?

Gonna have your hands full on the bench this winter.

I have a Tannik 350, a React 350+, and an Arc 7wt, so I opted to add to the Tannik line and picked up the 450.  I also chose the Hatch 7Plus in matte black.
