Shallow Water Boat
« on: November 02, 2007, 09:51:54 PM »
I am new here, I am From Middle Tn but I live in Memphis and Trout Fish the Tail waters in Arkansas.  I have fished from a Supreme several times, I love the boat not crazy about the price for a weekend fishermen ( if you are a guide the boat is probably unbeatable ) what is everyones take on the Riverhawk - King Fish or Pro Cast or the other one that looks just like it.  Has anyone here fished from a Spider Boat ( they are awesome ) http://www.spiderboats.com/ - or is the Jon boat with a  15 hp the way to go any answers --

First off West TN, welcome to the board! We are glad to have you here.

Man, your question is tough. As someone who owns a Supreme, it would be tough for me to recommend anything else.  ;D I can see the benefits of the Gheenoe for certain rivers (or a lot of rivers) and that choice is perfectly fine and one I might have made had I not fished from a Supreme first. I believe they are fine craft and David (Woodsman) can attest to this (BTW, he has one for sale).

From what I understand the quality of the Riverhawk is questionable. (i.e. quality control issues) I don't have first hand experience but do know of those who have and they might weigh in.

I think you should do your research, talk to as many people as possible, read reviews, yada, yada, yada and make your decision from there. As well, some factors I weighed were resale value of the Supreme (will hold its value better) and all day comfort and all around usability as boat for both lakes and rivers (if you want it for more than just river fishing).

Feel free to ask any questions you like!

YMMV

West TN:
I grew up in the West Tn area and also fished out of White River style jon boats!  I currently have a RiverHawk Kingfisher series, and love it.  I did not go with a jet for budget reasons; therefore, I have to drag it at times.  I have fished the White in it with 3 lard butts, and it is stable as all get out!  The procaster with the full rear deck is another excellent option.

thank you fellows for all of your advise the boat issue, for me is one that has been going on now for about a year.  I have the cash in hand to pull the trigger on a supreme with a 15 prop or a spider or riverhawk with a jet, or jon boat with a jet. The bad thing is that I know several other fly fishermen that own jons and supremes with props and they go wherever they want and love their fishing rigs more than anything in this Trout river world we live in.  I am not trying to be funny about the boat issue its just my first boat and I want it to be the right choice ( I dont think my wife will ever agree to let me buy a boat again ) well thanks for all the comments and if ever in West Tn or Arkansas and you want to fish the Little Red or Norfolk ( dont know much about the white > have always had a guide on the white ) please feel free to come fish with me, again gentlemen thanks for the Tennessee welcome talk with you soon > John Paul

Buy the Supreme. Nuff said.

Thanks guys, it looks like the choice is going to be easy, have either one of you ever fished in the supreme off the river - Cumberland, small lakes, different types of water other than shallow water trout streams ? how did the boat handle - how did the small sides hold up - did the boat get plained off well ? Not a challenge on supreme knowledge just wondering how you two felt the boat did in a non river atmosphere -  Thanks for your thoughts

It isn't a big lake boat. Yea you can go out and not have any problems but it doesn’t handle wake or chop very well. It sits high and water coming over isn't an issue but running in during a windstorm is going to be painful. It's nothing but a flat bottom skiff and you'll feel every little wake all the way into your eyeballs. Add a little port or starboard wind and you got a water soaked thrill ride.

I'm interested in this thread myself for a future boat purchase.

Mike, thanks for the straight talk about what to expect out of the Supreme on a lake.  My question is how does this compare for the Gheenoe or the Riverhawk (i.e. lake use)?

My interest is for river use first, but some lake use as a lower priority consideration.

FT, welcome to the board. I have seen you on here but this is your first post.

I echo what Mike said, as long as the lake is good and the winds are low, you will be ok. I would prefer to the in my boat (Supreme) given the size of the boat over another boat, but that is just me. I love the stability.

The Gheenoe is a bit more user friendly in chop but it also sits lower in the water. I have two boats one for lake fishing and one for river fishing. I gave up on a perfect boat for both.

The other option that I used to use is a Semi V alum Jon boat. Keep it light and you'll be fine running/floating the schedules on the tailwaters and also have a good lake boat. My Lowe did just fine in both situations for years. Its about as close to the perfect multi tasking boat you can get but it's not 100% a river or a lake boat. Its also still for sale....
