Elk Generation
« on: February 14, 2008, 07:14:02 AM »
TVA shows water release from noon to 6 pm today, tomorrow showing 1000cfs also, probably the same time.

Should clean up the river for the weekend fishers.

Are you sure it's not a typo???!!!  Generation on the Elk!!!  Come on now... have you been smok'n those funny cigs again??? :o

Hell, the fish won't know what to do with clean water.  All the mommy fish will have to search around for the soap so the kids can wash behind their gills!!! ::)

Hopefully this may signal the start of a return to normal.  The stream really needs a good scrubbing to clean up the bottom and get all the "yuck" out.

Thanks for the update... if you happen to be out and about you might check and see how it looks.

Ralph,

I plan on doing just that, taking Sam up to visit his grandparents after school and have already planned on going out of my way just to see and smell generation.

That is good news indeed David. That river has been in need of a cleansing for a while now.

But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.

She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.

I was by the dam for a while today. The moss is pretty much gone. If you go you might want to bring your own rock though, i think i found all the caney crowd.

I fished the Elk this PM.... zip, nada, no luck... but... should you go soon (and they will be generating Tues and Wed, so that's why I went today... take some San Juan Worms.  The bait crowd did very well today with night crawlers... so some San Juan Worms just might work... the midges did not today.

The river is MUCH cleaner, even down at the bend.  You can actually see the rocks and you can see the bottom well ahead of you with a good pair of polarized glasses.

I was testing a new rod, so the catching wasn't a big issue for me today.  But next time...

Some kid claimed that they did real well with "trout candy"... whatever that might be.

Trout Candy is the fly that Tim Page makes and sells at his store in Lynchburg.  Kinda of looks like a Copper John on steriods.   :)  Whoops, I don't want Congress to be investigating us next.   ::)

Here is a link to the 'candy' pattern. I used to fish the elk a LOT. Trout candy is the top fly for me on that river and a great starting point for the elk.

Wrong phrase... Beatle Spin minus the spin is what the kid said he was using...  Trout candy is the purple woolie bugger.. right?

Beatle Spin minus the spin has its own website and is sold at Wal-Mart.  I happened to see a 24" brown trout that was supposedly caught on it about a mile north of Farris Creek Bridge last year.  So I ran out to Wally World and bought $20 worth. Only been able to catch two small trout using them.  So I have a box of that stuff sitting at the bottom of my tackle box.  :)

I just got back from a Dr. appt trip to Tullahoma, crossed over Shiloh bridge on the fish hatchery road. The generation has to be working, the river was pure MUD.

Great!!!  It's going to take a while... but I imagine the flow will get all that stuff pushed into the lake sooner or later!!!
