Elk is Picking Up a Bit
« on: March 18, 2008, 09:17:51 PM »
The generation at Tims Ford dam is evidently starting to improve the fishing as well as cleaning up the tailwater.

I hit there at about noon on the 18th after they had generated for an hour in the AM.  Bottom was nice and clean as far as I went with no evidence of the algae and crud of earlier days.

I started slow... using a #20 soft hackle I was 5 to hand for 14 solid strikes by about 3 PM... they just didn't seem to want to stay "on".  "Cookie cutter" rainbows of about 8-10 inches with one nice 12 inch brown that did an LDR after showing himself.

At 3PM I walked back up to the bridge and started casting just below the abutment.  Started getting frequent strikes, but wouldn't stay on... so I switched to a #14 soft hackle with a glass bead thorax and a touch of flash.  I banged over a half dozen rainbows one after another... the other folks were getting a bit testy about it... so I retreated to the truck.

Interesting day.

There was another fly fisherman just ahead of me on the riffle that was doing OK as well, but otherwise the "meat catchers" were the only ones doing much.

Not much hatch activity as yet with the midges, and that may have to pick up a bit to get any real activity on the river.  But once the swallows start flying.... watch out!

I do enjoy the Elk.  I've had lots of luck there in the past.  Caught my first brown trout there.  I look forward to enjoying that river this summer.
Fish on!

I managed 5 on Friday from about 10 til 2, but by 2 it looked like the waiting line at the unemployment office so I went home!

Fish did well until about 11 and then they just seemed to shut off.

TVA scared the heck out of us as they started blowing the horn at about 11, and released a trickle and then shut things down again.  No explanation.  One of the guides about got a hernia trying to get his boat back on the trailer...... :D

Not much surface activity till 2.
