New Old Hickory Lake Record Smallie
« on: April 27, 2008, 11:41:52 AM »
Check it out. This fish is a hog! The bronzebacks are my favorite fish to catch and I chase them all over the Cumberland River System. Old Hickory Lake has some fine ones that are rarely caught. It is nice to show some that you don't have to drive all the way to Tims or Dale in search of these fish. You just have to look a little harder.  ;)

Story from DougOutdoors.com

A nearly 7 pound smallmouth caught on OLD HICKORY Lake. Yes, Old Hickory. That fish is featured here. Thanks to Hoppy (Rowland Hopkins) for sending me the photo. It was caught on one of his baits and is he says an Old Hickory record: Here is the pictures of this fish, Old Lake Record Was 6 pounds 11 oz's This fish weighed 6 pounds 15 1/2 oz's Fish was caught on a Hoppy's Black Flea Flicker 1/4 oz. also we are in the process of getting the fish certified by the state. The fisherman is Billy Harris of Murfreesboro. Way to go Billy!

Sad to see folks keeping such an old fish when they could get a replica mount...

Maniac, I am with you on that , but how would you go about getting a fish certified without killing it? I have often wondered about that. ???

Agreed, I thought you could get all the pertinent data and witness and go for the record that way.

Hey, that is a fish of a lifetime for that guy.  I'm not going to bitch about him keeping a once-in-a-lifetime trophy like that.  He caught a hell of a fish, and he's got every right to be proud of it.  If he wants a skin mount, more power to him.

Now, if he was keeping and eating smallies over 4 lbs every chance he got, I'd have a BIG problem with it.  (That would be exactly the same as my gripe with former member Tubakka and his crew for killing multiple trout over 20").  But until someone shows that he's doing that, I'm absolutely fine with him keeping one big fish.

Heck, I've got a couple skin-mount fish of my own from my younger days.  If I caught a fish like that today, I'd turn it loose, but I completely understand if someone else makes a different choice.

Taking one trophy fish doesn't bother me a bit.  I only get upset when it is taken to excess.

I'll say this, if I were to catch the (fly record Striper) he's going to die. I release 99.99% of everything I catch but a record is worth keeping IMO.

I agree a ten pound Striper is hard to beat as far as table fare goes.

I think a 10 pound filet mignon would do the trick. ;D

Today's Tennesseean shows fish was released! Now someone else has a chance to catch that monster... ;)

bd,

People are going to keep fish no matter how much we whine about it or snub our noses at them. Get over it.

I know Boga Grips can be certified and accepted in an IGFA situation. And as mentioned....measurements, pictures, etc can help document a great catch.

Those replica mounts usually look better and age much nicer than a skin mount anyway. And by using the measurements, pictures, and scales.....your replica mount is sure to look incredible.  :D

I'd keep the striper Mike's talking about though.  ;D
