I fished in a tournament over the last two days and took first place with my teammate. The tournament was a two day tournament with random beat drawing on the first day, and leaders pick the beats on sunday. Scoring was 1 point per inch and 2pts per inch over 20. Each person scores 3 fish each day, team total is for both anglers. Pros/guides can only use one fly, 3 flies of that pattern. I guide so i had to use one fly. My partner was an am so he could switch up his fly.
Saturday morning i got a call from one of the guys from the shop asking if i could fish the tournament with a guy who didn't have a partner. The beats are all private water and there are some big fish in the section. The entry fee was only $100 which is a good deal for two days on private water. The first day i used a san juan worm with a LOT of weight because our rivers are still super blown out from all the snow still melting in the high country. I caught a bunch of fish and scored 95 points as a team putting us in 3rd place and 6 points off of first place at 101 points. The biggest fish of our first day was a 19" bow that i caught.
Sunday we got to pick our beat and were in 3rd place so we got third pick. The first two groups picked and neither one picked the obvious best beat with the biggest nastiest holes. We chose our beat and new then that we would be going home with first unless WE screwed up. I went with the SJ worm since the water was still off color and high. IT paid off with a 16", 17.5" and 19.5" fish for me. My partner caught two,16-17" and one 20.5" big bow. That was enough to put us over the top with 109 pts for sunday and 204 points for the weekend.
First prize was two 8'6" 5wt t3's and some bragging rights, since i spanked the owner of the shop i work for and one of their best guides. Pics to come....
This is my partner with a 20.5" rainbow on sunday. I'm waiting for him to send me some pis of my fish.
