Fishing Old Hickory Dam
« on: July 31, 2008, 10:17:36 AM »
Thinking about going up below the dam to see what I can get into. I am most definitely a warm water novice. ??? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Fly or gear?

If fishing gear - buy some shiners or net some threadfin shad and drift fish them in the current.  You never know what you'll catch - smallmouth, stripers, catfish, etc.

If fishing flies, throw clouser minnows on sinking lines.  If you see any fish surface-feeding on schools of shad, target them.

Fly for sure. I'm thinkging big clousers, minnows, maybe dark super buggers. I guess my question is how to fish them. Chunking at the banks?
BD- Thanks a ton for the help! :D

Clousers and deceivers work good on a sink tip. I don't know what the bait size is up there but you'll want to match the size as best you can. A 350-450 grain streamer express line on an 8 or 9wt with a 3' 20# fluro leader. I like to float with the flow and let the fly sink then strip it back in. Don't let the line sink all the way to the bottom or you 'll be cussing as you break the sinking section off a $70 line.

For smallies and spotted bass, you'll mostly be chucking at the banks around current breaks or rock piles.  Try superbugger or some other chunky, dark fly that imitates a crawfish.

For stripers, skipjack, white bass, etc, focus on schools of bait if you can find them.  The fish may be hanging a little way off the bank in the current, or they may be out in the open water, but most likely they'll be following the bait.  Throw something that looks like a shad.  Like Mike said, if there's no surface activity, count it down to get deeper, but not deep enough to get into the rocks.

You may want to look into bringing some gar flies - I'm hearing that there are some big ones on the Cumberland right now.

Plain white large minnow patterns with a lot of flash (2-2/0)  for the skipjacks/striped fish.  For the bass family think dark/chartruese (black, brown, olive etc.).  Chartruese seems to be a key for me.  I haven't had much luck with the topwater approach but I haven't really put the time in on it.  Good luck and if you see a guy trying to flyfish out of a white and blue bullet bass boat-that would be me- stop by and I'll tell you everything I know ( which won't take but a sec.

Good luck and save some for me,

Gary
