Boat Launch

What is the best place to launch a Gheenoe on the Caney?  I am new to the area.  Also what flies are they hitting right now?  Thanks for your help.  I enjoy reading the comments on this forum and pictures are great.

Hey Eric, welcome to the board, and the area.

I'm new to the Caney so I really am not the one to answer the launching question. I suppose it depends on the kind of fishing you want to do in part, and do you have a motor on the boat?

The Caney boating/fishing experts will be along eventually to offer suggestions I'm sure. They are probably out fishing.

So, what model Gheenoe you got? How you got it equipped?

the ramps are at the dam, at Happy hollow, Bettys Island, and the new one at Carthage at the ball field.  Depending on the generation schedules, and what you want to fish for...

defer to Mike A as he has the most experience at all of the ramps with that RiverHawk.    I haven't launched at the new one yet but this coming week has promise if I can get my back working like it is supposed to....

Welcome Eric, Leo summed up the ramp situation pretty well. The float from the Dam to Happy or Bettys is usually my most productive. The hot flies were PT's Scuds, Zebras, Soft Hackles. Lately I don't what they want. Last two trips have been a little bit slow but the few I am catching has been pretty decent Trout.

If you click on the fishing link, and then dig around in there you will find some very good info. There is a stocked trout section, tailwater trout section etc.  The Caney Fork from Center Hill Dam down is in region 2.

Thanks for all of your comments.  I went fishing on the Caney on Saturday.  I launched at Betty's island and fished down stream for a couple of miles.  Caught and released 6 trout.  5 rainbow and 1 brown.  Was only able to fish for a couple of hours, so I felt pretty good about my first trip.  What a river!!  I talked to several other fishermen along the way.  Everyone was very nice and helpful. 

My Gheenoe is 16 feet long, camo color, with a 15HP Evinrude motor and trolling motor.  If you see me on the river say hello.

I learned to fly fish in Colorado on dry flies.  I am learning to fish streamers and midges.  I fished an olive colored wooly bugger on Saturday using a quick retrieve.  It was a blast!!!

Hey Eric, congratulation on the christening!  There are a lot of folks that condemn the Caney fork, but quite frankly, there are as many more of us that love that river.  You will hear it referred to as the "Ditch" but in all reality, TWRA ranks it #3 in the state for Trout fishing.....

Mike Fishes a River Hawk, pretty easy to tell which one it is, it will be the one that is catching all the fish!!  He could be slumming though in his jon boat ya never know!!  I fish a Jon as well, with a funky looking casting rail on the front of it...

I use a green wooly worm a lot this time of year and it is productive.  Mostly in size 14 or 16 with a ton of lead on it to take it down.  You will find the Caney to be a great and productive river but like all the rest, it has its ups and downs...mostly down right now compared to what it has been for most fo the summer.

Glad you had a good first trip Eric. You will fall deeper and deeper for the river as you get to know her.

Todd - Thanks for the map.  It's great and will help a lot.

Leo - Thanks for the comment on the lead.  Wasn't sure how much I could put on and was having problem with my wooly getting down low enough in the water.

Mike - If I fall any deeper for the river, my wife will never let me go back.  I don't understand the negative comments about the river.  I only wish it was closer to Nashville so I could get there more often.
