Summer on the Elk
« on: June 09, 2009, 10:07:07 AM »
Looks like the Elk is settling into it's summer mode, although it's nice to have the 2-300 CFS flows to keep everything clean and cool.

I fished from about 9-2 on Monday, and didn't expect much given that the river had been pounded all weekend.  Surprisingly all fished well, and I ended the day in double digits to hand with an equal amount missed.  Our friends didn't really "turn on" until about 1 PM when the activity increased substantually.  The take included a couple nice sized Rainbows, and all the fish seemed to be in good condition.

The "Pot Patrol" interrupted things about 1:30 with a state helicopter patroling up and down the river looking for illegal plantings of pot, and a contingent of pot police lounging in folding chairs in the shade at the bridge.

Consistent activity seems to be limited to mige size offerings or San Juan worms.  I did notice a lot of vegetation floating downstream durning the day... not sure where it was coming from....

This is just the report I was looking for. We are thinking about going later in the week. Thanks!

During the week (when I normally fish), you can normally expect to see 5-10 car loads of folks on the river at the bridge area.  Having said that; the majority of those folks are "corn chuckers" and tend to stay in the immediate vicinity of the bridge.  The rest of them are generally old, retired farts like myself that generally know what they are doing and stay out of each others way.

Hit the Elk yesterday (Monday the 22nd) starting a 4PM.  The shadow line was far enough advanced that the entire period from 4-7:30 was comfortable for fishing.  There were only one or possibly 2 other fly fishers there during this period... the corn chuckers were there and some idiot with a net.

Later in the day there were some good size midges coming off and I took a fair number of fish.  Same patterns as per usual...
