Tuesday July 14: I fished the Elk this morning for the first time in several weeks. water temperature was 55 degrees; coldest water that I fished in a while. Fly fishing was good. Bait fishers were not having any luck and all went home, leaving me plenty of water to fish. I had a lot of sucess fishing an olive wooly bugger with a brown soft hackle dropper. I don't know if this is a proper way to fish, but I am telling you what worked for me. I caught fish on the wooly bugger while stripping across current and on the soft hackle on the swing. I usually remove one fly when I learn what the fish want, but today they wanted it both ways. Primarily rainbows on the wooly bugger and browns on the soft hackle. Nothing big. The browns were small and the rainbows not quite as small.
Had a great time and really do enjoy that river.
