Time Dependancy
« on: August 10, 2009, 09:30:56 AM »
Interesting experiment on the Elk Sunday PM.

Got up there at about 3PM... you would not belive the number of people up there... looked like the "Red Neck Riviera" with folks floating all over the river, rug rats raising Hell... total chaos... but I digress... tsk, tsk.

Had two rods that I wanted to fish, so I loaded up the 9ft PHY Parabolic and headed down to the "riffle".  I spent 2 hours on the "riffle" working 2 soft hackles... total take... 5 fish (2 nice 'bows).

Then I went back to the car, got the 8'6" Hildebrandt and went back to the "riffle" and fished it with the same 2 soft hackles.  Totally different ball game.  At this point the fish were willing and anxious to take a fly... the mist was on the water (plus all the noise had abated as well) and it was a time of peace and harmony.  Over 10 fish this trip down thru the run and more were waiting... but it was getting late... and the wife does get a bit "antsy" at times.

I'll echo William's comments.

I remember Hilderbrant spinners but I never saw a rod from them.

German bamboo rod maker from the 60s/70s... beautiful stuff!!!!  They are so sensitive that I can do most of my midging and nymphing without strike indicators.  Not too many of them over here, but with my international travels in a previous life I was able to make a few contacts.

It was an interesting evening, and I could feel some of the smaller stuff sort of "bumping" the size 16 soft hackles before they would take them.  I probably should have stayed till dark, but I've got to stay in SWMBO's good graces... we are getting ready for a week's fishing in Canada!!!

Steve....

It's unbelievable... I've got a couple rods that you can feel a #18 "Copper John" ticking over the rocks on the bottom of the "riffle".  You can close your eyes and picture that tiny fly bumping along.

Ralph, now that is what I call "feel".
