fly reel question?
« on: October 07, 2009, 03:39:15 PM »
I have a reel large arbor that is labeled 6/7

Would it hurt to use that reel on my 5wt with 5 wt line?

Can you use any weight reel for any line... just add more backing?

The only thing that can happen is to have an unbalanced outfit where you have too much rear weight which can tire you when casting all day. I would put the reel on the see if it feels too heavy, if not, don't worry about it.

The weight difference should be minimal between 5/6 & 6/7 reel.

That is good to know because in the past I have let some good deals slip because of the thinking "it is not a 5wt reel" but I have wanted to get a large arbor reel for a while now. Mainly for the drag up grade from palming and it looks cooler  ;D

The designation is just a suggestion I use 4 reels on 5's all the time because I like my trout rod as light as possible. I rarely use a larger reel on a smaller rod though. I may be imagining things but when I’m fishing without an indicator I think the lighter the reel the more takes I can feel through the rod.

My general rule for trout is spend all you can on the rod and line, skimp on the reel. Most of the Trout in the Caney can be brought to the net by hand.

Good advice Mike,

I guess I am  just getting all antsy wanting to buy a "big" reel. I don't do any striper or offshore fishing so my reels not need be real fancy. The last three years or so my $9 shakespeare reels have done well and caught some pretty respectable trout. I have upgraded rods and line in the mean time but my #5, #6 and #7 rods all still use those reels. The abuse and minimal worry has come in handy along with being interchangeable for the sinking lines I have but maybe good less expensive drag system would be my next step up.

What would be a good step up.... especially since I intend on doing more bass fishing with it in the coming year than in the past.

The Orvis BBS is a great reel for the money. Ross WW has some nice looking lower end reels as well as Redington. There are so many offshore reels now it's hard to keep up but if you stick with a well known name you should be ok.

Also look at the Tioga/Teton line. They are American made and reasonable in proce.

I havent had such good luck with my orvis bbs unless they are made in England.  However, I am rough on equipmet and use it more frequent then most.  On the flip side I do have a low end ross and it has held up well from the salt and the hybride ove the past three years.  Good luck!!!

I'm pretty sure you had the mid Arbor Craig which is a totally different drag system. The BBS is a rulon drag and though it won't take blazing runs from a Tarpon or Wahoo, around here it's pretty much bullet proof. Simplicity at it’s finest. I have three from England that I'll be keeping.

MADE IN ENGLAND!!!!!!!!

three words that helped make orvis become successful for a while. Then, they go to china and they get crap in return, and their product begins to fail.
