Holston River Information Needed
« on: March 15, 2010, 04:38:30 PM »
Any news at all from the Holston River...right outside of Knoxville? TWiles are you out there? I was wondering if anyone had some recommendations on this particular river i.e. conditions, flies to use, etc. Also, what about the Clinch. Use to fish it alot when I was in school up there but not much in the last several years. I had heard it had some oxygen problems. Thanks in advance,
BP

Both the Holston and Clinch should be fishing well.  O2 is not a problem on these rivers.  The holston does get warm later in the year but last year had cold water all season, so there should be some hice hold overs.  I think Rusty said he caught a nice brown on Sat.  Low water may be a problem if you can't float but I think they are backing off on the generation lately.  Not a lot of wade acess on either of these rivers though.

also, curious about the S. Holston. Heading up from Chattanooga early Friday morning. Might start by the dam.

Flies for the Holston are caddis pupa and PTs. All you need on the Clinch on low water are midges in sizes 18-22.  I haven't fished for trout much in the last couple of years but the reports have been solid on both these rivers.  The bows on the Holston fight hard for their size and it is a large river.

They stocked thousands of 9-12" rainbows over the winter in the Holston below the dam. The stripers should have plenty to eat! Like John said, caddis pupa and PTs are the norm. Zebras work as well. There are not a lot of wading access options on the river and if you go on the weekends, expect a crowd.
I'm fishing with a group of 8-10 anglers from my local E TN FFF chapter this weekend on the Holston. Hope to have a decent report next week.
One good thing is that TWRA have been busting poachers with cast nets over the past several weeks on the river. Always glad to see them out enforcing the laws.

I hear the Clinch is fishing well also. I live closer to the mtns and the Holston, so I seldom fish the Clinch.
