Recognize this plant?
« on: July 11, 2010, 06:43:01 PM »
Did some hiking this weekend.  Super hot and sticky.  Saw tons of this plant.  Most you probably know but there might be a few that's never see it.

Yep, my mind took a journey to 'yester year' while on the hike.  I remembered my grand parents and their eating of 'poke salad' or as they said 'poke sallet'.  They would eat what they called Creasy's salad and sometimes a Dandelion salad.  I remember I would be so embarrassed that I had to take food like homemade biscuits and country ham for lunch and all the other guys would have such delicacies  like a bologna sandwich.  ;D

That plant is poison. Never understood why anyone would eat it knowing it can kill.
Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be.

But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.

She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.

She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.

It can be eaten if prepared and eaten at the right time. (the stalk is always poisonous).

Never ate any myself and I'll have to say never tried to smoke it....   Wonder if it has any medicinal purpose, with the toxins?  ;D

It's picked at a younger age, before the berries come out, good stuff.

Polk salad Annie, gator got your granny.
