Zeroed.
« on: February 06, 2011, 10:27:29 PM »
Spent a very nice day in Musky country again Sunday and we had three solid fish follow to the boat and circle around several times but they just wouldn't eat.

Lost a nice fish yesterday after a few head shakes, had a couple other follows before the front came across around 1400. The wind picked up and clouds rolled in, thought it was a sign of good things to come and the bite would turn on. Ha. Nothing seen from then until dark. Water temp between 43-45 F.

Of late I've seen more fish in glides and shallower than I would expect for this time of year, often out in mid-channel. Foraging? Getting a tan? Taunting?

Same here all three fish were at the head of a deep section in shallow fast flow. I did see a big hogsucker in the same area so maybe they are starting to get that luving feeling. I think they spawn a little earlier then the stone rollers. It's still awful cold though...

Dave have you tried the Tiemco 600 SP hooks? If not go out and get some ASAP. They are made for Tarpon mouths and they will penetrate bone. Another nice thing is that they are almost a circle hook and they work as such. No need to break your wrist setting the hook just a nice strip set and it's in. They are amazing hooks, I wouldn't fish for any bony mouthed fish with anything less.

Yeah, have been trying the 600SP, thanks for the recommendation. They work pretty well but are harder to hone after dinging on rocks. I need to pick up some heavier mono for weedguards, ran out of #50 and used #35 on the last batch of flies, and it's much too soft, even doubled up. Prolly ought to have some #80 or #100 fluoro on hand anyway...

Either last year or the year before I got a few fish that had fresh bite marks on the caudal peduncles in early April; would suspect that it's tied to a bit of rough love.

Mike,  we fished on Saturday as well and got a big ol goose-egg.  Did have 5 follows and 4 of em were nice fish.  All but one came on glides and a couple were in fairly shallow water.

Dwayne,
We blanked too. After running into you it gave us some confidence, but it didn't translate into any fish. Nice talking to you out on the water though. You boat looks to be a sweet set up for that water too.

Mike,
At least you had some nice follows. I would have been happy to see one.

With all the good fisherman out there, it takes the sting out of getting blanked out of it a little for me. Looking forward to some warmer weather too. I have fished in a lot colder weather, but the cold really seemed to sink in on Sat with it being so dreary.

Good fishing,
Brian

Join me in the goose-egg club---just a part of chasin' these stubborn fish :P

Headed to the Nolichucky on Friday, and I found access to a private stretch of river I’ve been wanting to fish for a while.  I saw the landowner standing near the river, and he was kind to let me launch the Crawdad.  I KNOW this stetch of deep pools has to be hiding several nice muskies, but unfortunately, I was not lucky enough to locate one.  I fished my tail off, without so much as a follow---it was still a great day to be out.
In the clear water I spotted massive swarms of quillbacks, redhorse, spotted suckers, Giant carp, catfish, pods of gar lying on the bottom…a smorgasbord of musky food.  The fellow said he’s selling the property soon….hopefully, I’ll make it back out there after it warms a bit, and I’ll find the fish I was after.  Maybe the new owner will let me access as well, but I doubt it—NO TRESPASSING signs line the bank at every turn.
