Key West Day 1
« on: April 09, 2011, 04:41:48 PM »

Total count for our first day fishing was 7 sails (2 for me), numerous sharks up to about 9 feet (including 2 lemons that were about 7' that I caught off the sea wall last night, numerous jacks, bonitos and cudas.  There were nice sized tarpon swimming around in the dock lights here last night....going to see if I can stick one tonight....the dang sharks wouldn't leave me alone last night...lol....tomorrow we plan to do Tarpon in the harbor in the AM and maybe some wreck permit in the afternoon.  This is indeed a very fishy place.  Color me one happy fisherman!

Thanks guys.  :)

Day 2 count....for the two boats that were tarpon fishing we boated a combined 15 fish (6 for me) all in the 75 lb +/- class and I have no idea how many we jumped. Lots.  ;D ;D  Due to timing of the tides and the fact that we were having so much fun with tarpon the permit fishing got pushed off to tomorrow.  The inshore boat today had several jacks, sharks and other such inshore critters.  Also caught 4 lemon sharks off the sea wall at the house last night that were all in the 7' range.  Woooo-hoooooooo!!  Again we were kept too busy with the sharks and grilling by the pool last night to make a serious run at the tarpon in the canal by the house...not tonight though! To borrow a line from an old Saturday Night Live episode with Will Farrel (sp?)...... I've got a fever....a tarpon fever.....and the only thing that will cure it is MORE tarpon!!   ;D ;D ;D :D

Good stuff Tim,

We're all jealous as can be.  Live it up down there for us, and I'm sure several of us will be picking your brain for some ideas to experience a dream trip like yours.

Can't wait to see some photos.

Tim.  Sounds like a blast.  Was there last month and had a great time myself.  Its a fishy paradise.  Sounds like you guys had much better luck with the Sails than we did.

Who are you fishing with down there?  I am thinking about heading down again for 3 days in June or July.

Day 3..... we had a south wind today and it was a little "sporty" out there...anyway...todays tally included 12 permit to about 18 lbs. (5 for me), numerous bonito, a couple of blackfin tuna in the 20 lb range, a couple of smallish mahi and a couple of amberjacks in the 50-60 lb range.  Not sure what's the fishing agenda for tomorrow yet....but probably something including tarpon again.   ;D

As to who I'm fishing with JT if you check this thread you'll get most of that information.

There have been a couple of others added since then as the trip got extended another day. I ,m not sure about the spelling on all the other guys names  but I know that they include a guy by the name of Jeff Searcy, Tony Skinner and a guy by the name of Alex Canalejo (who I fished with today actually).

Needless to say I have been busy picking these guys brains and keeping my eyes and ears open trying to learn everything that I can.  There's just an amazing amount of fish here.  As soon as I get home I'll post some fish porn to go with the reports.

Short version of todays fishing: more tarpon, more sharks of various kinds, some mackerel as by catch.

Daily highlight was a tarpon that was an easy 45-50 lbs  that I caught in the canal behind the house tonight, after dinner by the pool, on one of the rods I built to freeline and downline shiners for hybrids with....shimano baitrunner reel with 20 lb braid and 40 lb floroucarbon leader. Needless to say I was very fortunate it decided to run back to the bay side after a jump and it's initial run. I saw lots of pilings and put on the brakes figuring it would have been gone anyway if I didn't. Fate smiled on me that time.  :)

Tomorrow we may try the gulf side or maybe more permit and yellowtail...gotta see what the morning brings us as the wind f/c have been off the last couple of days and there's a big bucks sailfish tx starting tomorrow so it'll be gunnel to gunnel out there tomorrow in that lane.

Loving life.

 ;)

Whoa baby  --- just when you thought it couldn't get any wilder....

The permit, grouper, kingfish and cero macks were ON today!! I don't know the total count at the moment but suffice to say that after a half day offshore catching permit in groups of triples  on every pass we went to the general area of the Marquesas and did some different stuff for a change of pace.  :)

While in the Atlantic we had an estimated 350lb+ blue marlin swim RTF up to the boat looking for something to eat....it went round and round the boat about 30-40 feet out....unfortunately we were not suitably prepared to serve that shoppers interest or his little brother that came by a little later when we were on the gulf side of the imaginary line. Good grief this is a fishy place!!!

The Keys are where it's at. Glad you guys are having a great time.
