Farm ponds just rule.
« on: April 09, 2011, 09:01:49 PM »
To me ther aint nothin like a good farm pond/lake, thers one a few miles from the house that has been a fave spot to some locals for years now, about 40 acers of clean, clear water that grows some beautiful bass and blue gill.

Back in the day it was a 600 acer farm with nearly half & half pasture/hard woods timber,  untill the state saw fit to build a new highway rite thru the middle of it & literaly cut it in half, after that some out of towners bought the part the contained the lake and promptly logged it out then sold the lots around the lake, now days thers houses all over the place and they keep build'n more.

My wife was raised in a small house that the farm owner rented and spent her childhood days walk'n the pastures and banks of the lake, I also spent a lotta time ther hunt'n deer and fish'n, the bass & bluegill were more than eager to keep us entertained all day long, 2 to 3 pound bass were the norm and the bluegill were so big you couldnt reach around them with your hand, the fish that came outta that lake were always very healthy and ther colors were picture perfect.

We still fish the lake a fair amount but it aint the lake it used to be, a lotta people are wear'n it out, I've counted as many as 8 boats at one time with anywher for 2 to 4 people in each boat, thers days you just cant pay a fish to bite, I think its get'n fished to death & its heart break'n to me & my wife to see whats become of such a great place.

This evenin was the first time we've had a chance to go this year, we still had a good time for a spur of the moment "lets go fish'n" trip, my youngest daughter dug her up some grubs and a few salamanders before we went and she caught the first (& only) fish of the day, we had a good time and it made for a primer to get us ramped up for the next time, the best part to me was my daughter get'n to fish one of our fave spots, shes already develop'n a love for the place but I wish she could have fished it as it was when I was a kid.

Looks like its time to clean up my little flat bottom and get in some farm pond fish'n.

Good bittersweet read - for me, the words came through with that fella's voice from the Heartland Series.   :)

Sorry your place has changed for the worse.  :'(

Sometimes it's just too darn hard to understand progress.  I am thankful to my parents who taught me to fish on a Robertson County farm where my parents rented a small farm-house, worked on the farm.  Sad to hear of the demise of a wonderful place.
