Nucanoe
« on: June 26, 2011, 08:12:18 AM »
I was introduced to the Nucanoe leaving bass pro yesterday and was very impressed with them. You could say it was love at first sight and I'm close to pulling the trigger on one. I would like to hear from someone who owns/uses one and not just someone trying to sell me one. They seem like rugged canoes that would stand the test of time. They can also be rigged to your specifications and offer many models so seems like a winner to me. Any thoughts anyone?

My OPINION, I demoed one a year back, most useless boat I ever rode in. Look at Natives, Wilderness or Freedom Hawks. As I said my opinion, but you honestly couldn't give me one

The stability looks pretty impressive on video, BUT it's under pretty controlled conditions with experienced users which possibly might not tell the whole story.  I'd have to use one on the water to have much of an opinion.

As a general rule of thumb, wanting to fish standing up out of a kayak seems to be a good way to get wet and possibly dump some gear sooner or later to me.

Go buy this Native Ultimate 12 on CL.  If you don't like it you can get most if not all your money back!

While I cant comment on the nucanoe, I just purchased a wilderness systems tarpon 120 a week or so ago.  Its only been on the water once but I was impressed with it.  So I can give a thumbs up to the Wilderness suggestion.

thanks for the advice guys. Sounds like I should do a little more research before making a decision. My only problem with many of these kayaks is that they only seat one. Since I assured my fiance she can go sometimes, I had better get a 2 seater if I know what's good for me. I'm looking for the best of both worlds, paddling and fishing for 2. Any suggestions on that?

Or save about five thousand dollars off the drift boat and just get a canoe.  If your fiancee is worth her salt she will sit in the back and paddle so you can fish.

Or maybe the best of both worlds.  This used 14.5' Used Native Ultimate.  You can convert the seating from solo to tandem depending on your needs.

I can testify for the Native kayaks.  I have the Ultimate 12 and it is the best kayak that i have ever fished out of.  Stability is un matched, very comfortable seat, plenty of open area for storage, tracks well, and is overall just a great fishing kayak.  If you can get a deal on Craigslist that is the way to go. (that is where I bought mine)  I am up at the caney almost every weekend.  If you want to test drive mine just let me know.

I have the Native Ultimate 12'.  Good boat, stable and it doesn't weigh a whole lot.  Its the only kayak I've ever owned so I don't have any comparables for you.  I hear the NuCanoes are pretty heavy...pretty important consideration if you're off-loading from a truck.  I agree with what others have said...get the 14.5 Ultimate, or a canoe if your going to have more than one person on board.  Or you could just step up to a jon boat, RiverHawk, Gheenoe or Towee as mentioned in another thread.

I've seen Yoda in action on this rig.  He is standing and fishing, the dog is content, and his wife is up front reading a Kindle that is in a plastic ziplock baggie!  It all looked very stable - and fun!
