Fly Tying Bench/Desk & Supply Storage
« on: July 06, 2011, 07:14:02 PM »
What kinda setup do you guys have?

I started out using a cheap Sterilite 5 drawer set from Wal-Mart. I velcroed a cabinet shelf across the top and clamped my vise to the side. It was totally functional because of the large drawer space and the fact that I could roll it out of view of my wife whenever she was on a cleaning spree. Darn thing only lasted a year before the wheels popped off and the drawers caved in.

I'm trying to come up with something more sturdy without breaking the bank. Any suggestions?

I just use an old desk and a lot of storage bins for the time being. Jarrod and I have been working on a really nice Maple bench and it's just about ready to bring home.

I currently have a Made2Fly desk (they are out of business now) and it has served me well. With the move to our new house, I am going to build a desk.

My new desk will be a solid core door (make sure and get one without the door knob hole drilled). Then have galvanized 2 inch plumbing pipe cut to length and threaded and also purchase threaded galvanized floor fittings to mount on your desk using carriage bolts. Screw in the pipe legs and add rubber pipe caps for feet. With the threaded legs, you can level the desk very easy.

I just poly the desk to seal and you will be good to go. After that, you can design your material storage to fit your needs and have plenty of space to tie on.

The reason I choose galvanized is that it holds up well and you can spill on it without fear of rust. I know it is overkill but it makes for a bomb-proof desk.

Cool. Be sure to post pictures. I'll probably go with one of these until I get my man cave.

I would not go that route.  That thing will be tight for about 24 hours after you assemble it.  Then, over time, it will get really loose and really wobbly, until this time next year it crumples into a sad pile of particle board at your feet.  Those things are a waste of money in my opinion.

PM Jarrod White, that guy is a master at wood craft, does a great job and supersedes the crafting expectations.  I am not going to find it on this site, but there are some pictures of his wood work.
