Two strikes...
« on: July 10, 2011, 10:23:03 AM »
Dave and I headed up to Musky country Sat and tried our luck in the stained water. The flow was about as low as the Supreme can go and we had walk the boat down a few runs and literally hack a tunnel past some large trees that have fallen across the river essentially blocking passage. It started out really good. I had two decent fish follow a fly to the boat and and take during the figure 8. I was hooked up to both fish for only a short time before both of them managed to get free. I blame my rod.. I was fishing a CPX 9wt which has a soft tip and isn't a good rod getting a hook into such a tough mouth in close proximity to the boat. The TCX 10 or a Predator 10 probably would have hooked both of those fish but I was being lazy and didn't change. To me just getting them to eat at the boat is pretty rewarding and that CPX 9 casts a 350 Intermediate Rio line sooo sweet. Getting a pic would have been cool but I'm not disappointed in the least. Later it was getting late and Dave noticed a fish fin come out of the water. I cast where he saw it and pulled another fish right to the boat. This one was flaring his mouth the whole way in as if trying to taste the pulsating waves coming off the fly.I just knew he was going to eat.  I was able to get it close,, to close and it saw the boat and bolted.

Water temps are still pretty cool right now and the fishing should be good. I had a great time and can't wait to get back up there again.

See, this is why I hate muskie fishing.  Report summary:  "It was an incredible trip!  We got two bites all day and didn't catch anything!  Can't wait to go back!"

F--- those fish. :)

hey bd,

Slimed hands would have been better... but it was totally worth it to see those fish eat at boatside!

Your schedule still pretty open?

Yea the fight isn't what Musky are really known for. The take however is like nothing else in freshwater. I'm pretty happy just getting them to open that mouth up and take a fly boatside. Now if those fish were high 40's or  50's I guess my attitude would be similar to yours Brian.

That's what I love about musky fishing....people who choose to fish amongst jet skiers on the lakes, and tubers and kayakers on the tailwaters for the love of "catching fish" in the carnival fomerly known as a trout fishery.
I'll take these isolated rivers and heartstopping fish any day.
F---those crowds.  :)

I'm carp fishing this month.  No jet skis, tubers, or kayaks on the 2 foot deep mud flats.  :)
