One of my last night excursions on the Caney I caught one and got it boatside. It was about 4ft long give or take. I took one look at him and his choppers and all I could get with in reach of was my lil hemos on the fly pack... forgettabout it. I popped the line and said see ya dude.

I have actually caught one on a White Humpy and one on a Stimulator before as they rise to the surface and feed on other things they are hitting.  And they love small crawfish flies if you can get their attention with them.  I was fishing with a buddy of mine and his son one time, and I hooked a huge gar upstream of them that went tearing downstream as I tried to put the brakes on it.  It swam right between his son's legs and the look on his face was priceless as he saw it coming at him.  He thought he was being attacked by a dinosaur!

Interesting to hear the feedback on lures/flies/conditions etc...

And gar are fun to toy with - seemed to be pretty easy to tease into eating a suspending jerkbait I found in Florida earlier this summer - just speed it up when they start to pursue; but NOT easy to get off a hook - I put one prong of a 3/0 treble in my hand up past the bend & went the minor med to get it out!  Note to self: don't try to handle one behind the gills like you would a pike, they'll just slither right out of your hand...put it on the ground, hold it down with foot and work on it...

I got out for 2 hours this afternoon.  Caught a few small smallmouth and a few decent redeye.  Then, the fish of the day came darting into some shallow water chasing something, and darted right near my feet.  Unfortunately he was not chasing my fly.  He ran back down into a deep run-out below a fast riffle and I could see him for about 15 seconds before he disappeared.  I ran my crawfish down thru the riffle several times in the same area I saw him flee to, but he would not take.  Remembering that Pal had said he was having success on minnow patterns, I switched from the crawfish streamer to a good ol' chartreuse/white #8 Clouser.  I ran this thru the riffle from the far side, so it would cross across the run-out almost perpendicular to the current and wash out into the shallow water below me.  Sure enough, on the 3rd cast I saw him chase it and hit it - a nice and fat 13" largemouth!!!

Solid work Todd!!!  8)Way to change it up, and not give up!!! DD and i were just saying the other day, a man could go just about anywhere with a clouser minnow and catch fish!!!
