Nices's Mill
« on: January 03, 2012, 10:00:32 PM »
The Tims Ford and Normandy tailwaters are so high wading is out of the question for me. And it doesn't appear it will change much in the near future.
So was thinking maybe Nice's Mill would be worth a try since the winter stocking is underway.
Suggestions, information, warnings, etc would be appreciated.
Thanking all in advance.

Nice's Mill ought to have some trout, but I don't like it too much.  I haven't looked at it lately but it tends to run pretty high if we get much rain - Mike may know more about whether it's wadable right now.  The big floods at Nice's do scatter the trout quite a bit sometimes.  There's a big hole right below the dam that will hold some, but it will likely be covered by bait fishermen.  In my experience, it's hit or miss on whether you will find good numbers of trout farther down or not.  It will probably be better after the next stocking on 1/13.

Since you mentioned Tim's Ford and Normandy I assume you might be quite a ways south of Nashville - if so, note that Shoal Creek in Lawrenceburg got stocked today, and the Harpeth in Franklin got stocked (below the lowhead dam) last month and will get stocked again at the end of this month and the end of February.

It's wadeable now but you'll need to go past the Dam a little ways. Olive or black WB should do the trick.

Last time I was there (admittedly a while ago), a white wooly bugger tied with silver flash chenille on the body was effective.  Stockers like the flash!

The "Washing Machine Hole" fishes well, as does the "Grocery Cart Riffle" and the "Brake Drum Pool".  The trout like to hang out around old tires, Firestones if you can find them, but the Goodyears fish well too.  Watch out for casting nets on your backcasts, prepare to be low-holed, and no, those are not cigars floating by on top of the water...

I could share a really funny story about one of my fishing trips there years ago,,, but I better not. Wouldn't want to incriminate myself.

Mr. E Thompson,
I have moved out of state and have not fished Nice Mill winter stocking for a couple of years so this info may be outdated but.....
First, check the water level at   http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=03428200
and don't try to wade if it is over 3.75 gage height. And then be very careful close to the dam...very slippery.
Second, the fish do spread out and most fishermen don't. I prefer to fish down stream a short distance if it is crowded up around the dam.
Third, an olive woolybugger usually produced for me.
Oh how I miss flyfishing the Tennessee rivers.
Good Luck and God Bless
Wm
