Jackson Kayak for New River?
« on: January 22, 2012, 04:43:53 PM »
Ive read good reviews here and elsewhere on the Cuda and the Coosa. Anyone have experience with either AND knowledge of the type of kayak best suited for a river such as the New? I plan on a decent jon with jet outboard eventually, but I can be in a kayak sooner and for less dough. Also, how comfortable would a 6'-8" 235 lb flyfisherman be in either model? Would one be more stable for stand up flyfishing? Thanks!!

Also, any opinions on how a Supreme would hold up on the rocks in the New? Assuming I do my best to avoid most of them? Just wondering if I should stick to aluminum...

i have heard nothing but good about both boats, but at 6' 8" Why bother with a boat?!!! you can wade anywhere you want!!!! :o

Lmao at Yoda of course at 5 foot 6 I am kind of leaning with him on that
The more I fish the more I realize it isn t about the fishing.  The older I get the more I realize it is about the moments God has hand crafted just for me.

Which new river?  And if your talking about the new that runs from NC, through VA, and into WV, which section (general location is okay)?

I am 230-235 lb and fish fine in the Coosa.  I have not done a lot of standing up yet, no real need in fall/winter with the seat in the high position.  My 6'5" buddy (only 200 lbs) has no issues in his Coosa.

Cuda will be a better choice if you sections have lots of flatwater.  Coosa will do better in areas with lots of rocks to dodge.

I don't have enough time in my Coosa to really have much info to offer but I will say it paddles well, is very stable, and about as well thought out as any of the fishing yaks I looked at.

Thanks guys. Mostly fishing on the New (the one from NC to WV) near Radford. Occasional trips on flat water such as Claytor lake or various ponds, but mostly the section of the New within ten or so miles up or down from Radford. There are a few decent rapids but Ive not got the guts yet for those. Im thinking get the Coosa first then the latest generation of the Cuda at a later date.

I hear ya on the wading but at 6'-8" your center of gravity makes wading more difficult then one would think at least in deep water lol. I stay out of water 5'-0" or deeper unless its summer wet wading when I just swim if needed. Plus, something to be said about a lazy evening drifting with a 6 pack and some catfish poles tryin to catch dinner...

Thanks again guys. Ive got the river boat/kayak bug bad and am looking forward to using a more efficient tool for exploration. Ill let you what I decide, probably not until July/August.
