battery power for gps/sonar

thinking about mounting my lowrance on new boat, space is limited and weight is an issue, what is smallest battery i can run on and have it last all day?

Yoda, we have some ultra light and ultra small lithum (sp) batteries for motorcycles that might work well.  I will send you a link wednesday when I get to work.

Do you know how long it will run gps. Its a Lowrance hds7. Need to get one in time for tourney this weekend.

Yoda take a look at the spec page in your manual to see how much power draw it produces.  I'll get some battery specs toady at work and post them.

Power Supply: Input Current 0.8A at 13VDC with backlight on, 0.4A with backlight off  

Lowrance sells an ice pack for making the HDS-5 portable and it has a tray for 12 vDC 7A sealed batteries and charger (one battery and charger included)

Don't know if maybe a similiar route would work on the boat and/or if you need two for all day.

I used to use a Yuasa (or equivalent) NP12-12 battery (sealed lead-acid, 12V, 12Ah) for powering a Lowrance flasher in a canoe. It would run a loooong time -- like most of a week-long Boundary Waters trip if it wasn't on all the time. (I also use two of these batteries to power my backpack electrofisher...). I suspect that they'd work pretty well for running your graph/GPS, and they're a lot cheaper than lithium.

Thanks guys!!! y'all are the best!! got a Yuasa battery went with a smaller one, guy says it should run gps for around 15 hrs. w/o backlight.
