FLip a Yak River
« on: April 01, 2012, 08:07:36 PM »
Drove upto,  Flip a Yak, again this weekend and it was awesome.  Got on the water around 7:30 in the morning got off at 3:30 and did not see another soul besides the pal fishing with me.  It started off slow the first ten cast and then the fish started biting.  There were numerous times where Mike and I had doubles.  The water was 80% percent clear, and site fishing was at a premium.  We both came to the conclusions the smallies are spawning right now, do to the nature of where they were.  I found a flat rock that was about 5' off the water and was able to cast to cruising fish off the gravel bar, epic.  Here are a few pics of what we caught.

Hope everyone has a great week.

and my daughter thought she would make me dinner when I got home :D

Pal's out,

I need some mr. tiny jaws very soon. Looks like you guys were into them pretty well. Rookie question: What are the differences in smallmouth vs largemouth spawning, mainly in terms of catching them?

I think it needs to be named break a rod river. Broke the 5wt I had Sat right off the bat today. I picked up the yak to launch and it slid off the ramp onto the rod I had laid beside the ramp. We floated another stretch today with my daughter. Didn't fish much even though I still had a spinning rod.

I've made a few mods to the yak to help prevent anymore breakage. This isn't the place for expensive rods. Also, I finally found a good use for a William Joe stripping basket belt I bought about 4 or five years ago. It's perfect for the yak. It keeps the line out of everything on the yak, gives you a place to hold the rod when your standing up and need to paddle, it folds up nicely when you need to sit down and paddle, and keeps your line out of the current when you wade. I also have a hip shooter but I think for the yak I think this is a much nicer option.

Enjoyed it!

Nice pics.  Sorry to hear about the mishaps.  I was working all weekend, and I have a busy week ahead.  The smallies should be moving off the beds after the full moon April 6th - so that week after should be really, really good...

Todd,
My experience in MI has been that the smallies tend to hide and sulk for about a week after spawning.  The stress of the whole procreation thing tends to wear them out.  Is it different here?  Just wondering...

Yeah - I didn't word that well, but it should have sounded more like what you are talking about, with the "week after" being roughly around the 13th.  April 15 is almost always a good day to be on the water around here, and this year it looks like a really good day.  Full moon is the 6th, that gives them a week and 2 days- and then BAM!

I hope the bass can find some spawning water - my local water is at 67cfs right now, and normal for this time of year is almost 300!  I hate to say it, but we need a good shot of rain!  :o

Smallmouth in creeks tend to have much greater spawning success in low-flow years than they do in flood years. You may want to hope for a LITTLE rain, but not too much.

That's good to know.  I was out for an hour this evening and saw a huge buffalo, tail up and digging.  I started working a fly to him, and I saw a bass come out and "nudge" him out of the area and then quickly retreat back behind a log.  I cast a fly in the vicinity of the bass, and twice he/she came out and just "nudged" at my fly to push it away.  They are definitely on the spawn right now.

How could you see anything with all those Mosquitos?   My two year old and walked along the river tonight and got bit up pretty bad.   Going to try to get out during the morning....

Fred,

the bass seem to be in that "funk" now...  I got out for a few hours yesterday and could not find any bass in the "known locations" who wanted to come out and play.  We'll give them a week or two, and if the rains cooperate, things should really heat up!
