Two creeks

Made it out for a couple of hours Friday morning to hit my favorite local creek in the Nashville Basin and picked up a few red eye and bass.

Then headed a couple hours East and came across this Plateau creek.

Rumor has it that if you follow it down it becomes fishable......

That 2nd one would make some nice wild trout water if it was cold enough ;)

Got any pics of the redeye? Were they redeye bass, or the panfish that everyone calls redeye? If it was the bass, I am curious to see how their markings differ from place to place.

That second stream looks like a fun one to explore!

I have found that the markings on the redeye panfish (aka rock bass) vary a lot from day to day depending on where they are at. They are almost like chameleons - their colors will darken or lighten depending on whether they are out in the sun on a light colored bottom vs. being holed up under a root ball in the shade.

Not sure about the redeye bass. I haven't seen any of those around here. They are apparently thick in Alabama but up here we mostly have largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass in our creeks.

Dave and I had this discussion last week about Rock Bass and Redeye. I didn't realize that I had been misidentifying them all these years. Looking back I'm pretty sure I've caught real redeye. I always thought they were some kind of crazy hybrid from a rock bass and a smallmouth.

Here is a "red eye" I caught last Friday... My grandfather always referred to rock bass as red eye, so that name has always stuck for me.
I agree with BD's observation about coloration. The rock bass in the Big South Fork area seem to be be lighter than the ones here in Middle Tennessee and the ones in the Calfkiller seem a bit more yellow than other waters.

That is a healthy looking rock bass.  i bet that was fun!
