Getting dad started on the right foot...?
« on: April 24, 2012, 07:42:32 AM »
Dad has his new TFO 5wt, Barstock Reel w/line and some 5x tapered leaders.

He has got his chest/waist pack now (thanks Steve). What are the have-to's that he needs to start with by stocking it. Outside of waders/boots, what all does a "new" person to the sport need to have with them in their pack.

He will be fly fishing the Caney mostly.

Be sure to get a few rolls of tippet in 4-6x. If he doesn't know his knots well yet, a paocket sized knot guide card is quite helpful. A fly box with a few woolys, bhpts, midges and soft hackles should be a good start for the caney w/o overwhelming him with choices. A hemostat with scissor is helpful for cutting line, as well as releasing fish. Toss in some floatant and strike indicators and he should be all set.

What is the easiest for a beginner to learn to fish...a wooly bugger, a soft hackle or another?

I have given him some of both. We tried his first outing and I think I messed up by having him fish midges under an indicator to start. Seems like I should have went a less complicated way at first.

A bugger is a great way to start.

The buggers or soft hackles either one are an easy start, cast, swing, strip when ya feel like it.

Learning to nymph under an indicator is MUCH easier if you do it from a boat the first time. You don't have to mend as much when you're drifting along.  Once you dial in the mechanics of what the drift is supposed to look and feel like, then it's easier to learn to mend to get the same drift when you're wading in current.
