Any "Real" Trout on the Elk?
« on: July 29, 2012, 05:40:22 PM »
Since our splendid folks at the hatcheries and associated wildlife folk have screwed up the trout stocking this year so far, has anyone seen any decent sized fish on the Elk?  The 3-6 inch "tiddlers" are fine for practice and getting some of the neophites trained, but I'd sure like to see some real fish.  I'm to the point of requesting a refund on my $80 license.

Is this situation local (Elk & Duck) or state wide???  I'm just amazed that the folks responsible for the Elk river fishery can't get some decent sized fish to stock... or am I missing something?

Ralph,

The time or two your seen me this year was actually some of the few days I've had off since April 1st.

That being said, I've not been on the Elk since around the time the Brookies were stocked.

I'm on vacation, may try and hit the Elk this week, if I run out of stuff to do :)

I like solitude, something that's getting harder to find. #1 reason I got my first boat.

To catch larger than normal fish on the Elk on a regular basic, a person has to get away from the hard fished spots, same places TWRA stocks.

They are in there, ask anyone that I took on a float trip last year when the Cicadas were out, "sure do miss them bugs".

I concur with David. They are there but you have to fish the over looked spots away from the crowds, fish slow, and stay as much out of site of the fish as possible. Hint...a lot of the shallow ripples that people pass thinking the water is to shallow over have those pockets of water that are 1-3 feet deep and hold nice fish.
