coast guard rated hp
« on: August 02, 2012, 10:57:39 AM »
Is it legal to add a larger Hp to a coast guard rated hull, ie...add a 9.9 Hp to
13ft riverhawk with a rating of 5hp?

I can't remember off the top of my head if it's actually illegal.  If I remember correctly it is not, but don't quote me on that. However, if you have insurance, you'll probably blow any chance of coverage if you ever need it.

JUST FWIW I've been stopped by the CG on Priest because my daughter was standing up in our pontoon while underway... I was informed that boating was like a theme park ride where you must remain seated and keep your hands in the ride at all times.....

That Day I saw:
Park Rangers in a nice new Park Ranger center console.
Coast Guard in a nice Center console
TWRA in an older center console
Sheriff dept wilson or rutherford or both, not sure
Metro in a center console.

It was heart warming to know our taxes are supporting the boat industry.

Or a 5hp sticker.

Would an 8hp push the 13ft RH upstream against a moderate current?
Ok, let me rephrase that, what is the least hp you would install
on an 13ft RH, in order to move safely against the current?

If you're talking an older 2 stroke 5HP, you'd be surprised by the power, a friend had one on a 15' Old Town Guide(a heavy canoe)that would get plumb scary at times with us both in it.

Go with the 2 stroke 9.9, probably weighs less than 4 stroke 5 hp.  If you get checked and they say something about the motor being larger than the max hp just tell them you know Grumpy, and you will not get a ticket.
