Redington CPX discontinued.
« on: September 24, 2012, 04:29:03 PM »
And has been replaced with a new line called Link. My initial side by side comparison (same reel, same line) is that the new rod is much stiffer or faster or whatever you want to call it. I was yard casting a 390 grain rio outbound floater. The Link requires the caster to really speed up or overline to get the rod to flex and give the line speed needed for those long casts that have soo much momentum they pull a little drag off the reel at the end. The link is more TCX like. The CPX flexes deeper letting the rod do much of the work and is hands down an easier rod to bang out distance. NO QUESTION. At the end of the day I'll take a rod that's easier to cast over any new high mod, carbon fiber, gen xxx, ultra super hyper fast, etc, etc.

The CPX was IMO as close as I've ever been to a high end rod at that price point. I'll miss them dearly. If you find them on clearance and you got the jingle they are some very nice sticks.

2nd on the CPX.  Best rods I own.  I prefer their 10 wt to an Xi3.

You can tell that Sage bought out Redington.  They come out with a PRIME rod, and just about the time you're gonna man up and buy one or two, they expire the series and replace it with one more aggressive.

I have not tried the Link, but I'm curious how they compare to a BVK.
I believe their new 9 ft predators have similar feel to the CPX's but they have beefed up the gloss on the blanks, and it dampens the sensitivity and makes them a heavier rod.

I won a 9wt Redington Predator in the carp tournament and fished it for the first time the other day. My first impression was that it was waaaay too stiff and cast like a clunky piece of shit broomstick.

Then I realized I had accidentally swapped my spools out on my reel in the dark that morning, and I was trying to cast a 6wt line with it.

So, never mind.

Just got the 6wt and a second 12 wt for muskie--both about 70% off.  Smallies and Muskies better watch out...I'm coming in 2013!

Maybe I got a little excited... I bought the 2 piece 12 wt from DD's recommended site for $134, and the 4 piece 6 wt from Cabelas for about $139.  Just stoked to get a steal like that.  If you break it and send it back....Reddington will send you a Link or 9 ft Predator to replace it.

If I could keep buying I'd get the 9 ft 10 wt.  I landed several Muskie, striper, and a few mid sized tarpon on it.  Freakin awesome rod.  Reddington replaced it wit the Link when this happened.

The Link is nice... But it feels a bit more delicate and breakable ( kinda like a bvk).  That 10 wt was a work horse , but it couldn't take a 250 lb Net man falling in the boat and bracing on it while trying to scoop a 43" Muskie.

More like 60% off.

Thought too long and Cabela's was sold out of the CPX by the time I decided to pull the trigger.

Sierra is now clearancing them out for roughly half off.  Had to buy the 7 wt.   ;D

They also have a real bargain on the CT 4 & 5 wts.
