PB Spotted Bass
« on: October 07, 2012, 03:37:19 PM »
Thursday evenings are turning into my weekly fishing outing due to my schedule these days.  I try very hard to get out at least once a week.  This was probably my last wet wading trip of the season.  It felt great during the afternoon, but when the sun went behind the trees my fingers I got pretty cold.  My hands were just about numb when I made it back to the car past dark.  My friend and I fished a little different this time.  Usually we fish downstream for Smallies, but this day we ended up fishing upstream.  I think I prefer our usual method, but we still caught plenty of fish.  As this season moves on, I am starting to find the Smallmouth are getting fewer and fewer on my outings.  Oh well, it's about time to switch target species for the winter.

I was working a small cove when I got the big bass take, you know where they just come up and sip the popper like a trout sipping a dry fly.  In my experience small bass don't do this, only the nice ones do.  Damn it!  I missed the hook set.  A quick false cast and placed the popper right in the same spot.  Same fish, same take, game on!  After a good fight, I got the fish to hand.  It turned out to be my PB Spotted Bass, right at 15".  Not a huge fish, but it is always nice to catch the biggest of a species that you have ever caught!  Most Spots I catch are around 8 - 10", so it was a great delight to catch one significantly bigger.  We fished till dark, but not more big fish were landed.  I'm looking forward to next Thursday.  Where to go, where to go?

Thanks for checking out my post.  Cheers!

Thanks fellas.  I'm hoping to get a few more good bass trips in before it gets too cold!

Thanks y'all.  I wish I could have gotten out this evening, but it wasn't to be due to working just about 7 days a week right now.  Really looking forward to December when that is going to drop down to 3.
