Wading boots/shoes opinions
« on: December 08, 2012, 04:30:14 PM »
I'm looking for some lightweight wading boots with good support, drainage, ability to add studs. Not sure if I want felt or rubber. Suggestions??
My Simms G3's are the bomb but a little heavy for hiking up steep terrain.

I prefer any felt boot with decent ankle support in that type of environment. If I go in with a daypack, I will take my keen sandals for the hike out. You can wear them with a thick pair of socks for extra comfort and warmth. Usually, I do not wear waders when hiking and fishing so I typically have enough room for this set up. On the hike out, just lash the boots to the outside of the pack. Slipping a pair of keens on after wading over slick rocks all day really feels good.

Ever considered Korkers Chrome with hiking soles to swap out with?

I like my Korker Metalheads & the BOA lace system, should be seeing the new Guide Boot in a week or so.
One thing about them, most folks go up about 2 sizes to fit, i normally wear an 11, wear a 13 in Korkers.

Grumpy when I looked at them last year the cheapest version was the lightest. I don't recall the model.

The Chrome is the lightest at $200, the the Redhead at $109 is the chepest, not all that heavy either.
The Chrome is completely synthetic & dosen't allow water to soak in.

The BOA lace system is just plain awesome. Makes getting the fit right super easy and as Grumpy stated, the synthetic material doesn't absorb water. Work the spend for sure.

I love every Keen product I own.  I bet these would be comfortable.  I'm really not a fan of the Neil Armstrong moon boot trend that most wading boots have adopted....most are just too darn bulky.

Mike, I use the Korkers redside (I think that's the name) and I use the rubber soles to hike in, then switch to felt on the water.

I don't worry about changing shoes/soles and just hike and fish in Simms Freestone boots.  The felt is important on the slick mountain rocks...  On the other hand, I go through boots a lot faster than I should.  Hiking is pretty tough on them...

If you're going to be going out over the winter, wet felt and freezing temps don't mix.
