Stones River Battlefield 150 years later.
« on: December 29, 2012, 09:03:56 PM »
I was going for a period look to these, not tack sharp stop action. I tried to not include any modern items in the images, not an easy task... Lots of fun in crappy weather. Hope you enjoy.

But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.

She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.

She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.

Mike,

Those are some fine shots for sure.
Thanks for sharing.

That war is still romanticized by those in the north and south for obvious reasons.
But, while I'm hiking up and down hills in here TN, I think of those poor soldiers on both sides of the struggle who had to do the same and wonder "how did they do it?"  I think of the terrible conditions, lack of proper clothing, the less than desirable menu, and many other things they had to endure.  And, most of all, the incredible loss of life.

Mike, the black and white effects are cool.

Hauntingly beautiful. I really like the grain + sepia.

You still thinking about heading up for the Gettysburg 150th this summer? Late June should have lots of bugs on the Great Valley limestone cricks...

Thanks all!

Dave, thanks.  I've seen several images from these that were edited in modern form and to me they just don't look right.
I talked to some folks at this show about Gettysburg and they said they would avoid it due to the excessive crowds. Not sure at this point.

Good stuff Mike, i've found bullet's on what used to be my grandparent's farm near Cedars of Lebanon that were from that era.
There was a small opening in the ground near the find, was to scared to go in it to see what may have been there :-[

Those are really nice shots...my 10 year old and I went out today and had a great time.  We had time to see the infantry demostration at The Slaughter Pen as well as the artillery demonstration back at the Visitor Center.  We hiked from the Slaughter Pen to the Vistor Center between demonstrations and I took the opportunity to remind him of the perils his great great great great grandfather (I think I put enough greats in there!?) would have endured has he marched and fought in those fields 150 years ago...and how lucky he was to survive.  It really hit him when we talked about how he (my son) would not be here walking the trails if his great great great great grandfather had not survived that battle.

The slaughter pen is an eery feeling place. I was riding my bike near there last summer when I noticed a strong strong smell of blood in the air. I was thinking maybe there is something to all this paranormal stuff then I noticed two large Great Horned Owls beside the road just ahead of me. They had torn rabbit to shreds and were feeding on it.

It sure is...we used to jog those trails back in college and I always found myself looking over my shoulder and doing everything in my power to be sure I didn't fall too far behind my running partner, especially when we got close to the slaughter pen.

Loved the pictures and the color you used. As far as battlefield ghost i am not sure. I grew up on Missionary Ridge-actually had a stone solider monument looking at the front door and civil war markers in the front yard. Never heard of any ghost there. But I can also say that in my high school years when Suzy Q and I would be parking in the woods of Chickamauga Battlefield there were some strange feelings that we would get. Kind of like there was something unnatural around.
