Supreme on CL
« on: February 01, 2013, 11:52:30 AM »
Hope this isn't bad forum ettiquitte, but I saw this out on Craigslist...it is not my ad.  I don't know much about these boats, but they seem to be pretty popular here so figured I would share in case anyone is looking:

No problem here DSchlact.
However, that doesn't look like any Supreme I've ever seen. I could be wrong and maybe they once made a base model boat but it would be news to me. Not same same.

interesting...and I'll 2nd the bad pics comment.  I just noticed that the transom is cut down to accomodate a short shaft motor...hard to tell if it was like that from the factory or a homebrew modification.

Poking around on their website I'll say at first glance it looks more like a Shawnee Classic than any of the Supreme models, but again - I'm not real smart when it comes to these boats...I can spot a Gheenoe copy from a mile away, but don't know where to start with these guys.

Hearing you guys talk about these boats has got me real curious though.

I'm getting more and more convinced that this is a Shawnee Classic:

The one in that picture has the same color and notched transom...are Shawnee and Supreme the same?

There were several companies making those green boats in that area. They are made very bare boned and basic because most of them were used as rentals for the many lodges on the White. If you want a testament on how tough and safe this style of boat is... Rent them out to complete boat newbs on a fast flowing and rocky river like the White. They've been doing it for years now...  It's hard to say who made this boat but I would not think Supreme put their name on it. The Supreme name has always (since I've known them) been attributed to the top of the line fit and finish in that style of boat. However, I wasn't in the market in 99 so I don't know for sure what they were building.

DSchlact, When the market sank a few years back it took some of the most well established boat companies in Arkansas and abroad. Supreme, was just a small family owned business but it Was one of the companies that didn't make it. Rumor has it the owner was not being very responsible with the company to begin with and then the bottom fell out. I think another thing that hurt the company is that they relied almost solely on sales in the White river area. These boats last a long time and you don't get loyal customers who need a new boat every couple of years. Mine is 7 years old now and I know I can easily get another 10 years easy and likely many more years then that.
Rob Williams bought the company name and the molds and began rebuilding the company. Not long after that he also acquired Shawnee. At one time Shawnee and Supreme were the two biggest competiters in that market. After a disappointing experience with two Riverhawks I started doing research on these "white river boats".  Davy Wotten tried to steer me to Shawnee while others towards Supreme. The Supreme won. They are both great boats and now they are both owned by the same family. Shawnee makes a lower end basics bare bones boat much like the one is this CL ad.

Here's another older Shawnee

If I am not mistaken the Shanwee's were first then the Supreme's came later probably a few years earlier than the one listed on CL. It possible they shared a bit before evolving to higher end which isn't uncommon between a lot of boat companies.

He could be selling it as a Supreme since they are more well known too.

In 2004 i bought the last Supreme that Al the original owner with his wife sold through the shop, as Mike stated Ark was their main target although they wanted dealers for other areas. Al was something else, we spent over an hour putting my motor on the boat, he wanted it right & it was.
They started going through dealers after that & next thing you know, Al getting up there in years decided it was time to take it easy & sold it. They had guys from Ranger boats that would moonlight building them. Ranger used to build/sell them way back when.
The new owner ran it into the ground & at one point, i heard he had destroyed the mould when the bank started to take it over.
AFF was another builder & they built a solid boat, the lids on their boxes were aluminum & solid. I have a friend that is still running his AFF, it has to be pushing 15 years now.
Two regret's i have is selling mine & becoming a dealer way back then :(
