The title has nothing to do with what I am going to write about, just figured I would name this  blog that.  So....needless to say, at one time in my life I was about the, "BRAND".  The names could have been Simms, Horivs, Sage, LOOP, ETC. and then one day I came to the conclusion I will never look as good as the models in the mags,(not completely true, probably better in most instances, but who needs to split hairs on this post) so I am going to fish and wear what works. (One caveat before I vomit my beliefs... you get what you pay for in some instances....waders, boats, tents, jackets, coffee and cereal)   For years, and when I say years, 9 to be exact I wore Costa Del Mar glasses, fact check me in my pics.  I swore by them, nothing better, cant fish without them.  Until, 5 weeks ago someone broke into my car, stole my shades, boose head phones, and a little piece of me.   I went to Publix and purchased the most ridiculous pair of rock star glasses I could find that were polarized and went to Fl.  To my amazement me, I could see in the water just as well with those $19.99 specials as I could with the $250.00, 580p lenses.  Sure I did not look as cool to the dude in the maverick, but piss on I him I fish a TFO and not a loomis so he probably thought I was a duewy  anyways. 

Long story short, I had a pair that was broken and I sent them in. Costa gave me a new pair for $69.00.  Two thumbs up for the raping.  They have sat on my dresser for two weeks now.  Maybe I am wiser, less vain, or quite frankly, dont give a damn.   I understand good stuff cost money, God knows Thumper taught me that, but sometimes the name---"has a lot of boot left to fill."

Hey, i'm fishing TFO & Cortland rods now, the expensive stuff is sitting in the corner & they're 12 years old now.

My eyes, , i forked over the bucks for some good coverage & will continue to do so being i've spent my entire life outside for the most part.

I'm not knocking $19.99  glasses, i just spend a little more for something that helps me maintain what i use daily.

Lost one pair of glasses this summer (rope swing, didn't thing to take them off, yes they had a croakie on them and a hat(which floats))

Another old pair (9 years) the hinge pulled away (last 3 years have used a safety pin instead of a eyeglass pin), superglued and used for another 2 months (mostly for weedeating). 

I need to weedeat several properties tomorrow, got me some $10 echos from the hardware store.    Optics were fantastic in the garden this afternoon. We will shall see how long before they get scratched up.

My eyesight has gone to shit the past few years and I cannot see anything outdoors in the sunshine if I am not wearing polarized sunglasses - but for some reason I feel like cheap-o polarized sunglasses may be to blame.  I wish I had forked over the dough for better outdoor eyewear over the years.  My eyes just feel "burned out".

I like good quality glasses and I definitely see the difference in the 580G costas over a cheap pair of glasses

I've recently moved back to my hometown and was really surprised to see so many trucks (high school kids through age 25 or so) with Salt Life, YETI, Costa stickers.   This is Northeast Mississippi.  Nowhere near saltwater, no need whatsoever for a $300 cooler.  The new thing now is a remote controlled spotlight on top of the truck.  I do understand that (for here), but the rest is nonsense. 

Then again it has been 20 years since I lived here, and when I was their age I saved up for a $160 pair of Oakley's and proudly wore their sticker on my Nissan low rider, with huge ass sound system that cost more than the truck.

Not knocking anyone who buys super high quality stuff, but unless you are out doing whatever it is all day every day, I don't see the need in spending 3-5x more for that extra 10% of "better".  Like Abel pliers.  Really?

You're right JW, there's a lot of stuff i don't have because i can't afford it & to me cheaper isn't a substitute on a lot of things.

I'll spend the money for my eyes. They are the only ones I have and they are worth the money I spend.

FWIW, $69 for a broken pair converted to a working pair is a not a raping.

I have to go the cheaper route these days. My 5 year old and especially 3 year old are hard on sunglasses. The older one lets them fall off constantly or closes rod lockers on them and the little one thinks she has to open the glasses all the way out flat then wrap around her head.

You might think I'd be better served to put the glasses away but it doesn't help those kids are like bugs to a bright white glow at night when it comes to my fishing specs.

I just give up. I'll go cheaper than high end but they still have to be polarized and strong enough to not shatter easily. My wife showing me a case at work from a big honking crankbait stuck in a guys pupil did the trick.

Prices have gotten stupid on just about everything. It has nothing to do with worth and everything to do with perceived value. Quit wasting your money on expensive crap, and spend it to get to a special place. Nothing satisfies me like a day in what I consider the perfect place, where ever it may be.
