Monday 05/14, I talked to a TVA employee late in the afternoon, they started an outage that will last 3 weeks, so no generation.

Not good! Is this to get more water in the lake?

they are doing an inspection of the penstock and some repair work.

The lake is way below where it's supposed to be.

The last time I was  down there, it looked like they needed ALOT of generation to clean out the water and the riverbed.  It was very "scummy"...

I had to search "penstock" to understand.

At first I wondered why they were raising the lake to work on the dam. I understand better now. Sort of. Hope they finish sooner than expected.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A penstock is a sluice or gate or intake structure that controls water flow, or an enclosed pipe that delivers water to hydraulic turbines and sewerage systems.

Penstocks for hydroelectric installations are normally equipped with a gate system and a surge tank. Flow is regulated by turbine operation and is nil when turbines are not in service. Maintenance requirements may include hot water wash, manual cleaning, antifoulant coatings, and desiccation.
Yesterday, I was at the bottom. I was at the bottom of a valley, in the river. Then my eyes hiked up the mountains to the snow capped peaks. I thought, "When I am at this lowest place I can be, standing in a river, everything is looking up."

I was thinking the same thing, toddro. I don't consider myself claustrophobic, however you spell it, but I don't think I want to crawl down in that dam cave.

I ran up to visit a friend at cline ridge Sat and stopped by the river. It was pretty low but still looked fishy.

That equals more pressure on the Caney >:( The Cumby, Clinch are in trouble, we expect the Duck to slow down during the warmer months, we've always expected the Elk to relieve a lil pressure on the Caney.
Trout have to have a cold flow periodically to survive.
It's either drought or Global Warming, either way you look at it, trout streams all across our nation are suffering & it's not just tailwaters.

TVA generated 2 hours this past Tuesday (08/07), I dropped by the Hwy 50 bridge at the dam, water was clear, moss was washed downstream towards my house :D and didn't stink.

Better get it while the skillet is hot. Will return to it's old self real fast in this weather.

Two hours!! Were there fish flopping on the banks of the lake?  :-\

BTW I'm hearing some awesome Hybrid reports from the lake. Have you taken the Gheenoe out there yet? Reports say they are on top and every cast is a 5 to 7 pounder. ::) I don't know how true that is but I'm hearing good stuff from several folks.

Had the Gheenoe out around Cline Ridge once over the July 4th holiday, got there couple of hours before day and had forgot once of the reasons I love running water so (not many 70 mph boats on the Elk) ;D

Talked to a couple of Bassmaster boys at work this weekend, they didn't know anything about a big Stripper bite going on.

I may to back to Cline Ridge on day this week hunting bluegill after I drop off the little man at school, will take the big rod (#8) just in case I need to defend myself.
