Elk 12-9-07
« on: December 09, 2007, 07:49:11 PM »
Spent a few hours on the Elk this morning to try out a new 4 wt. I guess due to the warm temperature the crowds were back in force. Still managed to pick up a few rainbows on woolly buggers and dry's. The midge hatch was very sporadic so a lot of down time. Still great to be out on the water.

Yeah, the warm temps brought a hatch of fishermen this morning. I should have known better but got to tighten the line anyways.

Which 4 wt did you pick up?

Dry's on the Elk? Tell me more :)

Picked up a Powell Timax 4 piece real cheap. I travel out West quite a bit and got tired to fooling with 3 piece rods. This one will fit in the suitcase with ease. It turns out this rod is fantastic !!. Throws a #10 bugger with ease and a dry into the next county if you care to do so. I fished a 5 wt Timax this past summer out West and was real impressed so I bit for the 4 wt.
You asked about dry's - I tied up a couple of #22-24 cream/grey dubbed bodies with just a little grizzly hackle. When the midges came off it worked pretty well.

The poor fish seemed to be really confused on Sunday.  The classic "off white" soft hackle didn't get a glance for the most part.  Nailed a few large bows in the riffle with a "Partridge and Purple" size 18 soft hackle, and the rest of the day they hit the no. 20 bead head dropper.

As reddog mentioned, the midges were just not coming off, and what few did come off that I saw were #30s or smaller.  He and I chatted for a few minutes while he changed rods and scratched his head over the way the fish were behaving, and then he went of to his pool and I concentrated on the riffles.

Ran into a young couple that had just moved to Athens, AL from PA.  This was their first time on the Elk.  They had stayed overnight at the park and fished both Sat and Sun.  They were appaled by the inappropriate behaviour of some folks, but were happy to have a sympathetic ear on Sunday.  To give you an idea of just how confused the fish were... they had caught several fish on a Royal Coachman!!

I've just got to get better about switching flies, and fly types when they aren't hitting well.  I've got a idea that it might be time to try some smaller streamers... anyone ever tried that route????
