Frog Hair
« on: September 12, 2007, 09:32:14 AM »
Anybody fishing Frog Hair?  I tried it for the first time during an extended trip to Colorado and Washington State.  I bought it on a whim at Cumberland Transit and started liking it right away, so I picked up a lot more while I was on the road.  In catching countless fish, I only broke off 2 - one of which I can attribute to a bad  Surgeon's knot.  I really like Frog Hair leader and tippet!  I caught a 25" Steelhead on 5x mono, and felt very confident in getting the fish in!
I used the mono tapered leaders, and then both mono and fluoro tippet.  It is very "stretchy", esp. the mono, and has a lot of "give" to absorb hard hook sets and big twists and pulls from the fish.  If it ever kinks on you (like from a strike indicator, etc.) you can stretch the leader while running your fingers over it to warm it up, and the kink will disappear.  I also like the way the fluoro fishes with dry flies, it really sets into the water to make it invisible, but does not seem to drag the fly or pull it under as bad as other fluoro's I have tried with dry flies.  It does not twist up and go "pubic-hair" like Rio does.  (I HATE the Rio stuff!!!) and feels smoother to cast than SA or Maxima.  I've been a long-time SA user (I love their light olive colored leader and tippet) and have recently been using Maxima UltraGreen (4x - 6x) tippet material as well, but I think I have become a 100% Frog Hair user from now on....

Tight lines,

Yup I really liked their tapered leaders. Haven't tried the Tippet yet. Where did you get the Steelhead?

I've been using the tippet material for a few years now ... I love the stuff ... seems to add a little give on the "aggressive" hooksets ... preventing a few initial break-offs ... I'm also a firm supporter of the Green Maxima mono ...

I have only used the tippet and I think it's great stuff. A little on the pricey side for tippet but I think it's the best you can buy on the market now.

I know some other people that haven't chimed in yet that like it a lot. I've never heard any complaints other than the price.

You hit the magic reason there toddro..it's more "stretchy" than any other that I have seen.  If you go to Frog Hairs site, you should be able to find a chart that shows the amount of stretch in the tippets material.  The flyer we have down at CT shows it at an average of like 31%.  First time Grumpy and I tried it floating last fall, we had the same experiences you described..less break-offs, more hook-ups, less loss of flies and expensive tippet material...hard to beat it.  There are probably others out there that can swear by other materials like the Seaguar, etc., but I find the Froggy stuff hard to beat.  It does cost a bit more than some other materials I have used, but the payback is in the less loss of flies and tippet!!

How would the frog hair work as tippet material for a hand tied maxima leader?
Thanks

Well...  I've only used Maxima tippet on a Frog Hair tapered leader (not the other way around), but I've not experienced any problems knotting the 2 materials together (using a double or triple surgeon's loop).

I should add that the two seem to like alot of "spit" on the knot to really bind it tightly.  With "dry" knots, I've had them slip out, luckily before my fly was in the water!

I tried frog hair for a while when i got one of the leader/tippet packs last year. I didn't lie it then, i was getting a lot of breakoffs and slipping knots. Could've been my fault too i guess. i found 3 spools of frog hair tippet on a creek a while ago. I haven't given it another chance, but i am keeping them in my vest for when i run out again. I use rio now and really like it. I can use a regular clinch knot and not an improved and the rio never slips on me. I like their floro a lot too, the blue label one. I used orvis mirage floro for a spool and don't like it at all. It is very brittle stuff and i had tons of breakage, the rest of the spool is in my junk pocket on my vest for an emergency. Another thing i like about the rio is the 50 meter spool instead of the 25 that frog hair comes in. I'm gonna give the frog hair another chance since i have pretty full spools of 3-5x

I really like using Frog Hair tippet and leaders.  Of all combinations and manufacturers I've used, I've had less breaks and more fish than with any other leader/tippet.  Unfortunately, I've changed jobs and taken a pay cut, which means I can no longer afford  Frog Hair.  Like adamtn, I've switched to Rio leaders and Rio Flouroflex tippet, but its just not the same.  Rio is much better than Orvis, Scientific Angler, or Cortland 444+, but its just not the same as Frog Hair.
Fish on!

There is a reason why you found three spools.  I have tried it, 5x and 7x and hate the stuff.  It worked great when it was new, but after a while it started breaking while I was rigging up.  Both spools did it 6-8 times that day.  Not sure why, I tied it the same way I always did before this happened.  RIO from now on.
I need a break!

I managed to trick a few on 7x Frog Hair today while island hopping on the Caney. There's some pretty deep holes in between the islands and I almost stepped in over my head more than once. Good thing I'm 6'3" with tall waders ;D
