How cold is to cold
« on: December 17, 2007, 11:45:35 PM »
I kind wanted to get some others ideas on how cold it has to be  before they wont fish . The main reason being I went  fishign this past Sunday and it was a great day even though we never got above 32 deg F.  Certain people looked at me like I was crazy and it made me wonder what is the cutoff for you . When do yall think that it is just to cold ?
The more I fish the more I realize it isn t about the fishing.  The older I get the more I realize it is about the moments God has hand crafted just for me.

Ice in the bottom of my boat can send me home. That glass floor gets pretty darned slippery.
Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be.

But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.

She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.

She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.

In tennessee my cutoff was about 28 degrees. My guides would ice up pretty bad then. In colorado my new lowest temp is about 15-20 degrees. Ice bulds up pretty fast in that low of temps and i can only get about 5-6 drifts before i need to clean the ice off. I can only fish about two hours when it i that cold. I am lucky though, i have 4 tailwaters within an hour of my house that flow all winter. All the other rivers have 90% frozen over for the winter

I live in new mexico now I hear you on that  . A trick on that ice believe it or not is pam cooking oil sprayed on your guides ya have to reapply it after awhile but it does work .

I have fished when ice impregnated my floating line so it wouldn't cast. I have went numb from the waist down and my legs wouldn't work when I tried to take a step. My biggest problem is keeping ice of the rod guides.

It was more of a mental and psychological challenge than a pleasurable fishing trip.

Funny you should ask, cause the Friday after Christmas is gonna be freezing.

Hey I love it when it is cold and nasty the fishing is normally good and that weather knocks all but the craziest anglers off the water .
The more I fish the more I realize it isn t about the fishing.  The older I get the more I realize it is about the moments God has hand crafted just for me.

went to the norfork last year and woke up the first morning to 20 degrees and 6 inches of snow decided it was too far not to fish so I went in 2 hour shifts and then I would sit in the hot tub for 30 minutes warm up with a cup of coffee force myself back into my frozen waders that leaked and back to the river . Is that a love for the sport or just plain dumb?
I just don't care!

never knew there was such a thing ;D my best memory on the Elk, a very nasty Sunday afternoon a few years ago, snowing like a mad man, I was the only one on the river, couldn't keep the fish off the end of my line that day. Was so very quite and peaceful.

If I want to go and can, I go. Don't want to be in the nursing home someday and wish I'd done this or that ;D

If there is a too cold to fish temperature, I haven't found it ... I spent 8 winters in Michigan chasing steelhead in rivers that were partially iced over ... I'm with Woodland ...  If I can get the time away and can get a line under water ... I am going to go ... seems like my fishing days are too few to begin with to let something like the weather or temperatures to reduce them even further ...

and I suppose I should add to that list above, home brewing,  I was planning on an all day trip to the Elk today, but my best bud tool buddy at work ask me to make him a batch of Red Ale for the holidays, I running behind on it.

So, I washing bottles and bottling it today, so it can age.

The coldest I fished was with Caneybuff on The SOHO.  28 degrees and could not see CB 40 feet away from me.  I was cold for about an hour and recalled CB offered some hooch a while back.  I asked him if I could take a pull, "Sure Bud here you go."  After five minutes or so I was smiling and the back of my neck was sweating.  I asked him what he had in it, "Bud its a little shine and some whiskey."  Needless to say I was not cold for an hour or so.  Good times though.

20's is about where I like to draw the line although I fished in colder weather.

Layer, layer, layer and always keep a "pull" handy!!  ;D
