Another "Sucky" Day on the Elk
« on: January 28, 2008, 07:50:19 PM »
A beautiful day in the neighborhood... but the fishies didn't want to come out and play!!! ;D

Fished from 11 til 4 and managed 3 little fishies... which was better than most of the other players.  There were a total of about 6 or 7 fly fisherfolk at the dam today at various times... and everyone was grumbling.

The mix on succesful flies was awsome... from bright orange woolie buggers (yuck!!!) to midges.

Something needs to change!!!!

Could be the high pressure that was up earlier and now falling, although if you believe the barometric pressure theories, then we are pretty close to being ideal.

Could be that fish were just tired, it was Monday you know. ;)

I was on the Elk below TF Dam yesterday also.  Mostly senior fly fishermen getting out of the house for a few relaxing hours on the stream.  Everyone I talked to was friendly and helpful.  The water temp was 50 degrees but it felt like 40 degrees in my waders and boots.

I was able to catch two RB trout - both about 10 inches using a Copper John / Hares Ear rig and another using a green Wooly Bugger.

The midges were hatching profusely in the bush along the stream-side but I did not see that many actually over the water.

I left about 4 pm when it felt like my feet needed thawing out.

Alright, walk lightly now - there are a few of us on here that resemble that remark, and there are a couple of us that really resemble that remark!     ;D

Take grumpy for example - he just gets grumpy about it!   ;D

Myself, I'm in that 'tween age - old enough to look it, but not old enough to actually be able to get out of the house for a few relaxing hours on the stream - during the week!  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Just corresponded with a friend that was fishing the "paint ball" area at the same time we were upstream.  He caught a couple right off the bat early, and then it seemed like everyone got lockjaw... sound familiar? ???

got on the stream just after noon, stayed a couple of hours, a few fish were working the usual constant midge hatch but couldn't get them to eat. Finally took one 12" Brown just above the turn hole on a #14 Ginger/Black Copper John.
