3 Jul on the Elk
« on: July 04, 2008, 09:38:54 AM »
Fished from 1130 till 4:30.  Hatchery truck was just leaving as I arrived at the bridge.  They dumped a few larger rainbows for the holiday crowd.

Same pattern as usual with fish hitting midge size flies, primarily soft hackles.  Size 18 might be a good starting point.

Took a couple 1+ pound 'bows by the bridge.

It looked like the "Red neck Riviera" until about 2 on Thurs.........  Folks were almost shoulder to shoulder except those in their lawn chairs sitting in the river.  Get the picture?

Oh I get the picture alright! The last time we were there some little redneck kid comes up the river right up underneath me just about.....I turn to see where he is and as I make the turn he chucks his lure right at me...all the while his redneck father says NOTHING!
Adam...you nailed it with the 76 Cutlass!  That is old school right there!

I've come to the conclusion from working weekends the past 3+ years, that if the only time I could get on the water was HOLIDAYS or weekends, I'd sell my boat and all related fishing gear, yes I'm spoil, if I pull up and I'm the 3rd car, I leave.

I use to fight the crowds, but getting to old and remember what I call the good ole days. ;D

There was some lady there teaching her son how to fish for trout with a spin rig.  The boy may have been a bit challenged. but he was getting so upset because 1) I was catching trout ("Ma!!! He caught another'n!!!) and 2) I was releasing them ( He put'm BACK!!!).

Hey, we still can't judge till we've been in their shoes.

Daughter and I went to the Elk on the 4th.  Drove past the Dam, cars were piled up to the road - shoulder to shoulder both directions, around the bend, etc...  We try to go find a secret place, but were scared that might be going over private property, so decided to try Farris Creek Bridge.  Wonder of wonders we were the only rods there except for some canoes in and out and for the redneck camped behind the MTFF portapotty yelling at his family the whole time we were getting set up.  Oh, and except for the redneck who was trying to impress his date by throwing firecrackers into the river where my daughter was fishing.  He started wading in toward my daughter when he saw me coming toward him and he decided it was too cold and got out and threw a few more bottle rockets.  The next two trucks came and 8 or 9 got out and I thought the day was over, but they went on up the river.  Had a really fun day.  First time in a long time my daughter threw a fly rod - but she caught lots of fish - all stockers - but she was excited.  She didn't want to get off the river even though the bottom dropped out and lots of thunder.  She caught the first fish on the 2nd or third cast - so she had some bragging rights for awhile - Green Machine.  Then I found out they liked BHPTFB and started catching more than her.  She started getting a little frustrated, so I changed her fly and moved upstream a little.  While making the move, I notice some fish stacked up in a hole.  Adjusted her indicator and showed here where to cast and how to let it drift, etc...  She stayed there a couple of hours and caught 10 or 12 - even with the firecrackers.  Yeh, it was fishing to dumb stockers, but figured it was to be better than trying the Caney on the 4th.  Something my daughter and I haven't done in a couple of years - thoroughly had fun watching her catch fish.  Great day!!
