RC plane photo shoot.
« on: September 29, 2008, 08:04:52 AM »
Found a great new place to practice shooting fast moving subjects with my 400mm and just some general photography this weekend. We have an RC Airstrip a few miles from my house where just about any weekend weather permitting, there will be some of the most beautiful RC airplanes I’ve ever seen flying. The guys loved me being there shooting their planes and catching the low flying stunts they were doing. Some of those planes are quite large and very expensive. One of them, the Miss Arkansas put on one heck of a show along with a P51 Mustang. They were seeing who could go the lowest. Mrs Arkansas had a slight mishap and crashed on the side of the runway at slow speed. She was just fine except for a chewed up prop, thankfully! I took 8gig worth of photos and hopefully I’ll get to sell a few CD’s to the fliers. Here are a few that I really liked. The rest of the album (not 8gig) can be seen here. http://www.trophyfishingtn.com/coppermine/thumbnails.php?album=44

I did a little macro shooting this weekend. I will try and get the photos up this AM.

Had the privilege of meeting Pappy Boyington at the Smyrna airshow in the late 70's or early 80's 's when he was still alive.

Steve I'm a aircraft nut and have been all my life. My grandfather flew B17's in WWII so I guess I get it honest.

RC flying is a hobby that has always held my interest but I never stepped into it. I'd like to get one of those electric foam fliers and give it try sometime but I'm afraid of where it might lead. I rarely get partially into anything...

I know Mike. I have avoided the RC bug as I know it would be a money pit as I love flying and aircraft. Right now, I will admire from afar. If you decide to take the plunge, I will live vicariously through you.  ;D

Although it is very fun, photography and flyfishing are an affordable hobby, RC anything is not. I have been involved in it, and it is a money pit with no bottom. :o

I've always thought there ought to be a way to rig one of those CO2-powered pellet guns on an RC Plane so you could rush in and shoot everyone else's planes down.

What is your definition of affordable?  I've got some serious chump change put into the photography, and it is starting to add up with the flyfishing.   ::)

Amen brother - that is why I stopped that before it got too big.  first planes were control line (pre RC)  First RC plane - maiden flight - launched it - up elevator - stalled - nosedived into the ground 20' from where I launched it - very short flight!  Pretty hard to take after the hours of building (pre ARF or RTF).  What I wanted to do would have cost countless hours and mucho dinero with the big radios, retractable landing gear, radial engines, ducted fans, etc....  Can't imagine what it would cost now, with the more sophisticated radios, turbine jets, scale engines, etc.....   I did not want to devote my life to the RC - had other things I wanted to do, plus splashed some of the fuel into my eyes because of a stupid accident with a glo plug.  That stuff is nasty bad!

uumm BD, what makes you think that uuuummmm it hasn't been done yet!  And remember it is a simple thing to make the planes drop things also.

I like the new things that they are doing with bigger planes and remote controlled cameras and camera mounts.  Awesome shots.  I would want to get back into RC just to do that!

Been flying control line and RC since my teenage years. Got into the heli's a couple of years back and worked my way up to a 90 size heli. It got expensive in a hurry trying to learn to to 3D maneuvers. It was minimum of $600 when it would hit the dirt. Finally got smarter and sold it all except one small bi-plane.
