JPP tailwater - 1/2
« on: January 03, 2010, 09:14:51 PM »
I finally had a chance to get out yesterday...unfortnately it only lasted 1 hour. I did manage to catch 3 on a #10 black wooley bugger before my left hand completely froze.

Speaking of which...what's the best way to keep your hands warm while flyfishing? I have a set of cheap neoprene glacier gloves. They were of no help what so ever. Are the more expensive ones worth it?

I use the fingerless wool gloves and love them.  Fished the last two days out in the boat and did not have a problem at all.  They are cheap and they work, for me at least and my blood is thin.

I prefer the 3/4 finger glove with mitten that will cover the fingertips. Wool is great, and I have a pair of the above mentioned gloves, but I take advantage of the modern materials developed to keep your hands warm even when the glove/mitten is wet. Chota makes a nice pair that fold away from the fingertips and thumb with no velcro to hang your line on.

IMO you cannot beat a good 3/4 finger windproof fleece glove. I have had a couple of cheap pairs and they worked great 1 was kenai the other reddington. I recently got the simms pair and they are friggin sweet.   They also have a much longer wrist cuff than the others did. I can fish tailwaters all day long in the colorado winter weather wearing these and i stay warm.

a couple of weeks ago i put in two LOOOOONG days on the frying pan and the temps never broke 10 degrees. The simms gloves are killer. Wind blocking fleece is the crucial feature though, at least for me.

I also have 2 or three pair of the simms gloves, and I just got the 3/4 finger windstopper gloves by Simms, and they are sweet also.

Got some of the Simms too. They are nice when running your boat up the river in cold weather.

Thanks Guys!

For the wool lovers...what happens when they get wet? My issue was as I was stripping line with my left hand, it gradually got wet and eventually soaked. Eventually ice began to form on the finger tips of the gloves.
