Fishing Report
« on: August 13, 2008, 05:50:43 AM »
Mid-week fishing continues to be good.  Despite the confusing frontal situation the fish are on the bite and midge activity seems to be increasing.

I hit the dam area yesterday for a brief time from noon til 3.  Good bug activity in the pool below the dam with heavy bird feeding.  Some good size fish moving in that area.

Since I was doing some experimenting I stayed right below the bridge and hauled in a respectable number of fish on 3 different soft hackle flies ranging from a size 18 to a sparsely tied size 10.  The first fly was fished in the film and the other two were light bead heads.

It appears like they may have done some stocking recently as the fish were all 10 - 12 inch rainbows and quite fat.

Ralph, I talked to a friend that said he was  there yesterday and that it was actually pretty busy at the dam but he went downriver and had pretty good luck.  Is the traffic at the dam getting heavier?

Ralph...
One of our buddies was up there yesterday and had pretty good luck with a zebra midge.  We are headed up Saturday. Maybe there won't be too many folks up there.  The Grumpy man keeps trying to steer anybody that asks abut the Caney to the Elk...I'm watching you Grumpy!  ;)

Tell Grumpy to keep his mouth shut.  I'm constantly amazed at how many folks are showing up in the middle of the week!  It used to be that if you showed up on a Tues/Wed/Thurs you had the river to yourself... now there's 6-8 cars there all the time!

Zebras, or anything that size should work just fine.  You need to stay in contact with the fly as the takes are sometimes subtle.

I've heard the Elk is on fire!  Lots of midges and small mayflies.  Can't wait to get down there!

All that investment there will be a good thing!!  The locals will make some money, and the Nashville boys will go bankrupt, and that ought to keep them quiet for a while... :P

Seriously, in the first 10 miles or so of river the only naturally occuring invertibrates are midges.  That may change with the new schedule being a bit more consistent, especially further downstream towards Old Dam Ford.  I have never seen anything coming off that I could characterise as a "mayfly".

You will see some terrestial activity, especially hoppers, inch worms, and ants as well as the occasional worm and bait fish.  But other than a hopper pattern, and cracklebacks, it's midge size flys that consistently pull in the fish.

I have yet to see many fish past the Bend Pool. If they are there we sure haven't seen them.  The Red River has been producing quality fish though.

Nope, there's plenty of stoneflies, caddisflies, sulphers, bwo's, and a few iso's.  I've seen 'em.  I'm going to the Elk, and I might take my jet ski for quick transportation to the next hatch!

I guess you missed the salmonfly hatch in May.  And then somebody said something about chromers?
